Dear West Essex School Community,

I hope this message finds you and your family well.

As shared in June, our district has spent the past several months exploring the possibility of adjusting school start times to better support student wellness and academic success. This work was led by a dedicated committee made up of students, staff, and parents/guardians who reviewed current research, analyzed survey data, and engaged in meaningful discussion about the potential impact of this change.

Today, I am pleased to announce that our district will implement a new school start time of 8:00 a.m., effective in the 2025–2026 school year. This change will apply to both the middle school and high school. The school day will continue to end at 2:35 p.m. This decision reflects our commitment to aligning educational practices with research on adolescent sleep patterns and overall student wellness.

To make this adjustment possible:
  • Instructional time will be reduced by 1 minute per period.
  • Lunch will be shortened from 52 minutes to 47 minutes.
We recognize that this shift in start time requires coordination and clear communication, which is why we have created a page on our new website that clearly highlights these changes. We want to ensure a smooth transition for staff, students, and families. To access the site, click the link below.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the School Start Time Committee for their outstanding work. Their commitment and collaboration was essential to this process.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to a successful year ahead.

Sincerely,
Damion Macioci, Superintendent of Schools
