Students will join as members of the West Essex chapter of the Technology Student Association (TSA), a national student organization created to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as business education. TSA aims to develop leadership, academic, and business management skills in the workplace among students and leaders within the community. Students can choose one or more of the 40+ architectural, engineering, and design competitions and work independently to design a project that fits the competition's criteria for the given year. Students will compete at the state level with the opportunity of going to Nationals. The competition criteria are announced in January and the New Jersey State Conference is held at TCNJ in mid-April/May.

Students also can compete in the STEAM Tank Challenge which encourages students to apply science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) in response to world issues. The challenge is open to K-12 public school students in New Jersey. It lets students contribute to making the country sustainable, healthy, equitable, and safe. Students apply as teams to invent something new, modify an existing product, or identify a situation or real-world problem that needs attention. Teams are provided criteria, and a panel of experts judges their designs and/or solutions. This year’s virtual competition challenges students to use the digital environment in their creativity. STEAM Tank is an opportunity for students to share their ideas and make a difference.

The WEuKNIGHT Peer Leadership Program helps welcome and support incoming freshmen as they transition to West Essex. Each year, selected senior Peer Leaders serve as mentors and positive role models, helping ninth-grade students build connections, navigate high school, and become part of the West Essex community.

Peer Leaders participate in specialized training focused on communication, leadership, relationship-building, and supporting younger students. Working in teams, they lead small groups of freshmen throughout the year through discussions, activities, and shared experiences designed to promote belonging, confidence, and school involvement.

The program begins with Freshman Orientation, where Peer Leaders help introduce students to the school, their classmates, and the traditions and opportunities that make West Essex unique. That connection continues throughout the school year as leaders serve as familiar and approachable upperclassmen whom freshmen can look to for guidance and encouragement.

At its core, WEuKNIGHT is about students supporting students and strengthening the sense of community at West Essex. Through the program, freshmen gain meaningful connections as they begin high school, while senior Peer Leaders have the opportunity to develop their own leadership skills and make a lasting impact on the students who follow them.
